The Hurll Group, now a sales and service company of combustion and process machinery, has operations in Australia and New Zealand which service Australasia and the South Pacific Island territories for process machinery and additionally, South East Asia for combustion equipment. Hurll Nu-Way Pty Ltd in Australia and Nu-Way Energy (NZ) Ltd in New Zealand, which form the Hurll Group, are owned by Enertech Limited of UK, which is a world leading manufacturer of combustion equipment. Norman J. Hurll & Co. Limited was incorporated in Sydney, apparently to acquire the business of James Hurll & Co. Limited, importers of refractories since approximately 1898. The first meeting of Directors was held on 19th September, 1924. Mr. James Hurll was Chairman and Managing Director. Mr Norman J. Hurll was Assistant Engineer at a salary of £3 per week. A workshop building was built at a cost of £176 at Kallara on land owned by Mrs. G.M. Hurll at a weekly rental of 1 shilling. The business was described as Engineers Merchants. In 1931 the business was described as Gas Engineers and Merchants and later Gas and Combustion Engineers. Mr James Hurll died in 1943 and Mr Norman J. Hurll was appointed Chairman and Managing Director in 1944. Mr Norman J. Hurll remained Chairman until 1971 when Boral acquired 100% of Norman J. Hurll & Co. Pty Ltd. and the name was changed to Norman J. Hurll & Co. (Australia) Pty. Ltd. to represent the Company's overall market activities. Norman J. Hurll & Co. (Victoria) Pty. Ltd was formed by Mr James Hurll and Mr John Walsh in 1932 based in Melbourne, which was very active in Gas Engineering and later the Refractory installation fields. Following the death of Mr James Hurll, Mr. E. B. (Bill) Wight became Managing Director and the majority shareholder. The Gas Supply Co. Limited, now Origin Energy acquired a 50% interest in Norman J. Hurll & Co. (Victoria) Pty. Ltd. in 1964 and in 1972 Norman J. Hurll & Co. (Australia) Pty. Ltd. acquired all the share capital and took over the trading operations. In 1966, Eclipse Combustion, a joint venture with Eclipse (USA) was established and in 1999 the joint venture was dissolved. Hurll Nu-Way Pty. Ltd., a joint venture with Nu-Way Ltd., U.K., was established in 1973 to handle the combustion business interests of Norman J. Hurll. Operations commenced in Singapore in 1979 with incorporation of Norman J. Hurll (SEA) Pte Ltd (subsequently named AZON Engineering PTE Ltd) and in 1996 AZON Engineering opened a Representative Office in Shanghai, China. Boral Nu-Way (NZ) LTD, was established in 1989 to handle the combustion products in New Zealand and was renamed to Nu-way Energy (NZ) Ltd. at the time of the float of AZON Ltd., in 1993, when Boral sold off their manufacturing sector(included Hurll) by creating a holding company, Azon Ltd, and floating it on the stock exchange for sale by prospectus. ITW of U.S.A.(Illinios Tool Works) purchased Azon Ltd in November 1996. In 1997 Nu-Way Ltd of U.K., a member of the UK Wolseley plc group, acquired all Hurll businesses from Azon Ltd. In August 1998 all Australian businesses were consolidated into one business entity currently trading under the name Hurll Nu-Way Pty Ltd. January 2001 saw Wolseley plc consolidate its burner and boiler manufacturing businesses(which included all Hurll companies). These business were then privately acquired and form the Enertech Group under holding company Enertech Ltd of UK. The Hurll Nu-Way subsidiary Azon Engineering Pte Ltd in Singapore, was, at end of 2003, sold to Aerzener Maschinenfabrik GmbH of Germany. |
